The Waves

The waves reach the shoreline
Finding their long journey’s end,
Taking a piece of it with them
As the next one begins.

A distant shore sat on the horizon
In the twilight of my youth.
And I sought it, naively thinking
That on its beaches lay the truth.
That its warm sands would offer solace
And at last a chance to rest.
Shelter from the storms I weathered
Knowing that I failed their tests.
But like each wave that crashed before me
I knew not what awaited,
All the lessons I would learn,
Joining the rest of the ill-fated.
Staring towards this destination
With a lonely dreamer’s eyes,
As the years carry me closer
To the day that those dreams die!

The shore now sits within my reach,
No longer a mere distant taunt.
The haven I sought thinking
That it held everything I want.
Thinking that peace of mind exists
Somewhere beyond this sea.
And foolishly believing
That there is any peace for me.
But like each wave that came before me
When I crashed upon the sands
It was not until that moment fleeted
That I began to understand,
The shore is not a destination
Just the cold comfort of a lie,
Nothing but a turning point,
Where those dreams are left to die!

The waves reach the shoreline
Finding our long journey’s end,
Taking a piece of it with us
As the next one begins.

A distant shore lays on the horizon
A reminder from my youth.
As I somberly move away from it,
Knowing now I’ll find no truth.
Its warm sands slip between my fingers
As my journey carries on.
The innocence that once sustained me
In my travels, is now gone.
But like each wave that crashed before me
The journey is all I have.
So I let this current take me
Down this melancholy path.
Still I know the storms lay ahead
And the exquisite pain they’ve in store
Whose weathering will leave me wanting
When I see another distant shore!

The waves reach the shoreline
Only touching it for seconds,
Still they take some of it with them
As the next journey beckons.

A distant shore sits on the horizon
Unlike one I have ever seen before,
And after being broken by my travels
I’m naively dreaming once more!
